Eye Emergencies

Here at Laster Eye Center, we provide care for a range of eye emergencies. We see patients with emergency symptoms same-day, no need to wait the next day for an appointment!

Retinal Detachment

Retinal detachment describes an emergency situation in which a thin layer of tissue (the retina) at the back of the eye pulls away from its normal position. The longer it takes to treat a retinal detachment, the more at risk you are for permanent vision loss in the affected eye.

Symptoms include:

  • The sudden appearance of many floaters – like a shower of pepper in the air
  • Flashes of light in one or both eyes
  • Blurred vision in one eye
  • Gradually reduced peripheral vision
  • A curtain or veil-like shadow over your field of vision

Other Eye Emergencies

  • Eye infection
  • Foreign material stuck in eye
  • Eye trauma
  • Scratched eye
  • Red or painful eyes
  • Uncomfortable, irritated, or itchy eye

Foreign Body Removal

Here at Laster Eye Center, we have the ability to evaluate and remove most foreign bodies from the eyes. Foreign materials can be sawdust, metal shavings, eyelashes, sand, dirt, etc. The longer you wait to have a foreign body removed, the more risk you are at for infection or permanent eye damage.

We are able to evaluate most patients same-day, but in the event we cannot see you, we recommend contacting your local emergency room. Always check with your eye doctor before seeing the ER, as your eye doctor is more equipped to deal with issues surrounding the eyes.

Whatever is happening with your eyes, or if you suspect that a foreign body has penetrated the outer eye, go without delay to the nearest treatment center. Doing nothing can lead to loss of vision, premature cataracts and damage to the retina so do not take any chances – delay is dangerous.
